Karl articulates the sheer comfort and familiarity of captioning since he has grown up with it (having a deaf mother). But he also expands the “assistive only” dimensions of the technology when he tell us that even though he has “what I consider to be pretty excellent hearing,” he now believes “it’s still difficult for me to sometimes follow the story without utilizing the captioning” because he believes that it helps his own attention span. Karl is part of a generation, I am predicting, that will all come to feel similar ways about captioning once and if they make use of it (in the gyms, bars, coffee houses, airports, etc. they frequent).
