Karl Fredal: Captioning as an Interpretive Act link to Karl Fredal DALN Record

Karl articulates the multiple relational layers that make up captioning, as the captioner takes what was “originally intended” and is “putting it through many filters”:  from speech to text (which is “in its own way a different kind of language,” he clarifies); through the “creative liberties” of editing that textual transcription; to the filter of “how the audience is going to interpret it.”  Along the way then, surely, stuff happens.  The final complex literate braid that might make up a captioned video is indeed a marvelous and meaningful act of interpretation.  Still, as Karl suggests, once all the marvel and smoke clears, there is likely “something lost in the process.”
