Performance: Paralinguistic Cues, Metadata, and Identity
Musgrave's shift into more engaged performance comes at the end of her narrative, when she describes what happened when her family first got a home Internet connection during her early adolescence. At this point in her narrative—just before its conclusion—Musgrave repositions herself as a deviant technology user who snuck online to chat with friends after bedtime. This part of her story is accompanied by more facial animation and shifts in tone than the other episodes she recounts: Musgrave smiles slightly when recalling the dial-up noise the computer made and nods her head toward the camera for emphasis when describing her attempts to muffle it to keep her parents from waking up and catching her online after bedtime. She also punctuates her statement about sneaking out of bed and her reasons for doing so with head movements.
