The college initiative process at Moraine Park Technical College, they set aside funding each year to establish new initiatives. So maybe it’s technology in the classroom, maybe it’s new practices within a classroom, and what the active learning lab actually did for us was combine new technology and active learning principles, new teaching principles, in one college initiative. In the college initiative process it’s almost like a grant and you have to state in writing what is your goals, what’s your outcomes, what impact is it going to have for the college and for the students. There is also a listening session that goes along that you have the opportunity to present what you would like to reach for and what you think the impact would be. After that process the college presidents make a determination of what projects will be funded.

We got a lot more support than we thought we might because it was a fairly expensive venture. It got a lot of good feedback on the idea and then at one point actually we thought the idea was taken out of the budget because of some cuts at the state level and how we thought they might affect our budget. Right around March we found out once again it was back in the budget, never really taken out.
