Patterson Video 4 Tim Flood The Wisconsin Technical College system requires all of the technical colleges to build projects or buildings that are 5,000 square feet or greater to silver leed level. However, Moraine Park has made the commitment to try to build all of our new buildings and remodeling projects to the highest points available, or the potential points I should say. Simply because some projects are too small, as was the case with this active learning classroom project, to reach silver level. But Moraine Park has made a commitment to try to achieve all points as possible, and we do this by recycling materials, whether that is the materials that are demoded from the project and recycle those scrap materials, then we also use low voc paints, we use recyclable carpeting so that it is 100% recyclable at the end of its life cycle. We use agrifiber core doors and these are doors that are manufactured with recycled materials. We used, in this project specifically, blue jean insulation, which is insulation that is made from recycled blue jeans. We also took advantage of this project to replace some of the exterior windows and that was a huge benefit because that allowed us to not only gain the energy efficiency, but also to provide day lighting in the classroom itself and I think that was important because it really provides a great learning environment. Our strong commitment to sustainability is not just within our building projects, but it is on a daily basis with how we do business. Not all sustainable ideas are cost effective, so there has to be decisions made on whether we’re going to move forward with the project because it is good for the environment or is it cost effective for the college. There’s always a fine line between that so we try to do the best we can with the resources we have.
