Ways of Reading This Book

Sound (Rich Shivener) speaking: Hello, this is Rich Shivener, author of Living Digital Media. Thanks so much for joining me here. Many webtexts—for example, in the journal Kairos: A Journal of Rhetoric, Technology, and Pedagogy—have brief sections like this that serve as a guide to the text. Although this section might come off as prescriptive for readers, it’s not intended to be. It’s meant to represent the book’s chapters and options for navigation. It’s about making the book accessible for users, viewers, and readers.

Sound (Rich) speaking: To support the orientation of engaging with Living Digital Media, some tips about navigating the book follow.

Sound (Rich) speaking: To start, let’s open the navigation menu on the top right. The navigation menu contains “Navigation Options” at the top and the chapter links after. Clicking on “Navigation Options” displays the main chapters, meaning the “Introduction” through the “Conclusion.” Clicking on “Navigation Options” again displays the “Ephemera”—or behind-the-scenes—parts of each chapter.

Sound (Rich) speaking: Now let’s turn to the main chapters of Living Digital Media. The main chapters have video abstracts and transcripts embedded at the top of the webpages. The main chapters also have additional media, such as images, GIFs, and videos. Together they add layers to the affective experiences discussed in each chapter. If you want to learn more about my thinking and experiences composing the book, check out the "Ephemera" sections that accompany each chapter.

Sound (Rich) speaking: And that’s all I have for this brief video. Happy reading!
