Afterword: With and Because of Genevieve

Considering the Needs of Diverse Individuals

  • People have different identities, personalities, abilities, and experiences that may make some kinds of participation harder or easier for them.
  • People from different generational, linguistic, cultural, and class backgrounds may value different kinds of participation.
  • People may have other obligations or responsibilities that can make some forms of participation challenging.
  • Some people need to vocalize in the company of others in order to work out what they think; other people need time and to reflect and deliberate before they speak or respond.
  • Some people may need to feel invited to enter a participatory space.
  • All people need to know that their contributions will be valued by others.
