Brenda Jo Brueggemann: Precarious Passing
In this clip, I aim to articulate how “deaf” technology, like hearing aids, can now also be taken up as fashion, and also then construed as a constructive way of identifying oneself (as deaf) even as it always remains the case that the use of, and subsequent dependency on, such technology holds one in a perpetually precarious bind. Every deaf and hard-of-hearing individual will have to decide and dance for his or herself, on the balance beam of betweenity, in relation to his or her uses of these technologies. And while these technologies can surely aid one’s literacy learning and interactions, they can just as easily strip it away.
