Speaking from his position as a member of a young generation of Somalis, Yusuf uses his narrative as an opportunity to further clarify his political stance and goals,
We seen the problems, we seen war and what it have done to us…I want…at least somethin’ like this [the program in which he is participating] where we can share our… thoughts and our ideas on how to come up with a better government, a system, even if we have to follow the American system, you know? At least it works for two hundred years.
Yusuf also evaluates the recent American effort to help Somalia: “They tried to help us once, you know?” he recalls, emphasizing “once” with a gesture, and continues, “It didn’t go well, you know? But they run away from it. And…since then it’s just a chaotic country.”
