Wandering Rhetoric, Rhetoric Wandering

Melanie Yergeau

YOU LEFT THE STOVE ON. YOU LEFT THE STOVE ON.

How long until you can return home? Can you jump off the bus and run? Turn around, turn around—these are your impulses. What do you do when the thought comes—in the middle of teaching? on an airplane? during the new Star Wars?

YOU LEFT THE STOVE ON. You will burn down your house. Your dog will die. Your backyard, with its dried yellow grass, will emerge in flames. Your entire neighborhood will burn. You would not have these thoughts if they were not true.
