Racial Shorthand: Coded Discrimination Contested in Social Media
Edited by Cruz Medina and Octavio Pimentel

This collection unpacks the shorthand that ignores the media produced by people of color, further erasing the rhetorical, oral, and aural traditions of these communities. It illuminates, disrupts, and challenges what is assumed about the relationship between people of color and technology. Digital writing environments provide contributors of this collection with the necessary media to create and communicate for the purposes of social activism, and these online spaces undergird the pedagogical practices of instructors engaging students with culturally relevant digital composing. Chapters expose the coded language about the same deficit narratives traditionally told about these populations, and the new media re-mixers re-write what is possible with access to ‘jailbreak’ the coded shorthand with liberated imaginations.
